Automotive
Detroit is home to the automotive giants -- General Motors, Ford, and Daimler-Chrysler -- and their suppliers, including Dana, Delphi, Lear, Visteon, and dozens of others. But our economy is much more than cars.
Life Sciences
Southeastern Michigan is also increasingly recognized for its strong life sciences sector, which includes pharmaceuticals, medical devices and instrumentation, medical diagnostics, and research services. More than 300 life sciences companies in the state benefit from the world-class research and development in the life sciences at the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University, to name a few. With over $2 billion invested in R&D each year and nearly 100 new companies since 2000, Michigan leads the nation as one of the fastest growing life sciences states.
Small Tech
Michigan is also helping to lead the nation in the development of micro- and nanotechnologies. In fact, Michigan has just leapt to #3 in the nation for venture capital devoted to the new “small tech” industry.
Diversification and Development
Many other thriving industries across the state produce everything from baby food to cereals, chemicals to pharmaceuticals, and machine tools to plastics. Read more about these and other key Michigan industries here.
The Automation Alley Consortium collaborates with government agencies and educators to attract world-class talent to the Metro-Detroit area, promote Southeast Michigan’s burgeoning technology cluster, and guide Michigan’s future in high-tech industries.
The State of Michigan’s Economic Development Corporation actively promotes the economic development of Michigan in the services and industries of the 21st century.
And the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce promotes economic development in Southeastern Michigan, as well.
